Is NAD a Peptide? What NAD+ Really Is, and Why Clinics Call It One

Disclosure: Nadosei sells an oral NMN supplement. This page explains chemistry and research, and it names our product once near the end. The sources are at the end of the page.

No, NAD+ is not a peptide. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids [2]. NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme made of two nucleotides joined by a phosphate bridge, and it contains no amino acids [1]. Some clinics sell NAD+ shots under the name "NAD peptide therapy" [4], and that is why many people think that NAD+ is a peptide.

The quick answer

  • NAD+ is a coenzyme. Its two halves are nucleotides, one with nicotinamide and one with adenine, joined by a pyrophosphate link [1].
  • A peptide is a chain of amino acids, usually 2 to 50 of them, joined by peptide bonds [2].
  • NAD+ has no amino acids, so it is not a peptide and not a protein. NMN, a precursor of NAD+, is a nucleotide, not a peptide [3].
  • "NAD peptide therapy" is a sales name. One clinic page uses it, and the same page calls NAD+ a coenzyme [4].

What is NAD+?

NAD+ is a small molecule in every cell of your body. Without it, cells cannot turn food into energy [5]. In energy metabolism it carries electrons: it takes them up and becomes NADH, then gives them away and becomes NAD+ again [1]. Enzymes such as the sirtuins also use up NAD+ when they work [6].

Your body makes NAD+ from forms of vitamin B3, such as niacin, and from the amino acid tryptophan [5]. But the finished NAD+ molecule contains no amino acids. Its formula is C21H27N7O14P2, and its two parts are a nicotinamide nucleotide and an adenine nucleotide [1].

What is a peptide?

A peptide is a short chain of amino acids, typically 2 to 50, linked by peptide bonds. A longer chain, with 51 or more amino acids, is a polypeptide, and proteins are made of one or more polypeptides [2].

A well-known example of a real peptide is glutathione. It is a tripeptide, a chain of three amino acids (glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine) [7].

NAD+ vs peptides: the differences

NAD+ Peptide
What it is A coenzyme, a dinucleotide [1] A short chain of amino acids [2]
Building blocks Two nucleotides joined by a pyrophosphate link [1] Usually 2 to 50 amino acids joined by peptide bonds [2]
Contains amino acids No [1] Yes [2]
Related example Its precursor NMN is a nucleotide [3] Glutathione is a tripeptide [7]

Why do clinics call it "NAD peptide therapy"?

Some clinics sell NAD+ shots and peptide shots together and put both under one name. For example, one clinic page has the title "NAD Peptide Therapy", but the same page describes NAD+ as "a coenzyme found in every cell" [4]. So the label is a sales name, not a chemical class.

If a clinic offers "NAD peptide therapy", ask what is in the vial. It can be NAD+ alone, or NAD+ together with real peptides such as glutathione. The answer changes the product, the price and the possible side effects.

How people take NAD+

  • IV drips: in a 2026 study, 500 mg NAD+ drips took 97 minutes on average, and people reported moderate to severe symptoms during the drip [9]. See our NAD+ IV therapy guide.
  • Shots: clinics also inject NAD+ under the skin or into a muscle. See our NAD+ injections guide.
  • Oral precursors: NMN and NR are precursors that the body turns into NAD+. In randomized trials, they raised blood NAD+ and were well tolerated [10] [11]. See our NMN vs NAD+ comparison.

For drips and shots, the FDA has warned that some compounders made IV products from food-grade NAD+, which can carry microbes and endotoxins [8]. Ask the clinic which pharmacy made the product.

The bottom line

NAD+ is a coenzyme made of two nucleotides, not a peptide, and "NAD peptide therapy" is a sales name. If you want to raise your NAD+, compare the forms on evidence, cost and side effects: drips and shots put NAD+ straight into the body, while oral precursors such as NMN have randomized trials behind them. Nadosei, for example, gives 500 mg NMN per serving, paired with research-validated companion compounds. Ask your doctor before you start any form.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Is NAD+ a peptide?

No. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a coenzyme made of two nucleotides joined by a pyrophosphate link, and it contains no amino acids.

Is NAD a peptide or a protein?

Neither. Peptides and proteins are chains of amino acids. NAD+ contains no amino acids. It is a coenzyme that many enzymes, which are proteins, use in their reactions.

What is NAD peptide therapy?

It is a sales name that some clinics use for NAD+ shots or drips. NAD+ is not a peptide. Ask the clinic what is in the vial: NAD+ alone, or NAD+ together with real peptides such as glutathione.

Is NMN a peptide?

No. NMN (nicotinamide mononucleotide) is a nucleotide. The body turns it into NAD+. In randomized trials, oral NMN raised blood NAD+ and was well tolerated.

Can the body make NAD+ from amino acids?

Yes, in part. The body makes NAD+ from forms of vitamin B3 and from the amino acid tryptophan. But the finished NAD+ molecule contains no amino acids, so it is still not a peptide.

Is glutathione a peptide?

Yes. Glutathione is a tripeptide, a chain of three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine. NAD+, by contrast, contains no amino acids.
