NAD+ IV Therapy vs Oral NAD+: Evidence, Side Effects and Cost (2026)

Disclosure: Nadosei sells an oral NMN supplement, so we have an interest in this comparison. Every fact below has a source, and the sources are at the end of the page.

NAD+ IV therapy is a slow drip of NAD+ into a vein, usually at a clinic or a wellness studio. Clinics offer it for energy, recovery and healthy aging. This page explains what happens in a session, what studies show, the side effects, the cost and the safety questions, and how a drip compares with oral NAD+ precursors such as NMN and NR.

The quick answer

  • What it is: a drip of NAD+ into a vein. One New York clinic lists drips of 250 mg and 500 mg [5].
  • How long it takes: in a 2026 study, 500 mg NAD+ drips took 97 minutes on average [2].
  • Side effects: in the same study, people reported moderate to severe stomach and gut symptoms, a faster heart rate and chest pressure during the drip. The symptoms stopped when the drip ended [2].
  • Evidence: we found no randomized trial of NAD+ drips in healthy adults (PubMed search, October 2026). Oral NMN raised blood NAD+ in a randomized trial of healthy adults [6].
  • Cost: $400 to $500 per drip at that New York clinic [5]. A month of an oral NMN product usually costs less than one drip.

What happens during a NAD+ IV session?

A nurse or a doctor puts a small tube into a vein in your arm, and the NAD+ solution runs in from a bag. The drip runs slowly. In the 2026 study, NAD+ drips took 97 minutes on average, while drips of NR, another NAD+ precursor, took 37 minutes. The NAD+ drips took longer because people had stronger symptoms during them [2].

In that study, people received one 500 mg drip a day for 4 days in a row, and the researchers followed them for 30 days [2].

What the research shows

Few studies have measured what a NAD+ drip does in people:

  • A 2019 pilot study gave NAD+ by drip over 6 hours. Blood levels of NAD+ and its breakdown products did not change for the first 2 hours, because the body removed the NAD+ from the blood as fast as it came in. After that, levels rose, and NAD+ and methylnicotinamide appeared in the urine [1].
  • A 2026 study looked back at clinic records of people who had 4 days of 500 mg NAD+ drips or NR drips. It found no significant changes in liver and kidney markers, an inflammation marker (hsCRP) or thyroid hormone (TSH) over 30 days. The metabolic results were mixed, and the study was not randomized [2].
  • The randomized trials of NAD+ that we found studied patients with specific diseases, such as a 2026 trial in people with heart failure [3]. We found no randomized trial of NAD+ drips in healthy adults for energy, recovery or healthy aging (PubMed search, October 2026).

NAD+ IV side effects

In the 2026 study, people who received NAD+ drips reported moderate to severe stomach and gut symptoms, a faster heart rate and chest pressure during the drip. People who received NR drips reported mild tingling in the tongue, jaw and arm, and mild cramps. All symptoms stopped when the drip ended [2].

The FDA has also received reports of severe chills, shaking, vomiting and fatigue after NAD+ injectable products, and some people needed medical treatment. The FDA said that these reactions are consistent with too much endotoxin, a contaminant that comes from bacteria [4].

Is NAD+ IV therapy safe? The compounding question

Compounding pharmacies make the NAD+ products for drips. In November 2024, the FDA warned that some compounders made IV products from food-grade NAD+ that repackagers sold. Food-grade ingredients are not suitable for sterile drugs without the correct processing, because of the risk of microbes and endotoxins [4].

Before a drip, ask these questions:

  • Who prescribed the drip, and who watches you during it?
  • Which pharmacy made the NAD+, and how does it test for sterility and endotoxins?
  • How fast does the drip run, and what does the staff do if symptoms start?
  • What is the total cost of the full series?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a heart condition, or take any medicine, ask your own doctor first.

How much does NAD+ IV therapy cost?

Prices depend on the clinic, the city and the dose. One New York clinic lists 250 mg NAD+ drips at $400 and 500 mg drips at $500, and NAD+ shots of 100 mg and 200 mg at $100 and $200 [5]. In our NMN buyer's guide, US clinics that publish their prices charged about $170 to $800 per session. A series of drips multiplies that cost.

NAD+ IV vs oral NAD+ precursors

Most oral NAD+ products use a precursor, such as NMN or NR, that the body turns into NAD+. Here is how a drip compares:

NAD+ IV drip Oral NMN or NR
Where and how At a clinic, with a needle, about 1.5 hours for 500 mg [2] At home, as a capsule or powder
Blood NAD+ No change in the first 2 hours of a 6-hour drip, then a rise [1] Rose in randomized trials: NMN at 300 to 900 mg a day [6], and NR [7]
Randomized trials in healthy adults None found (October 2026) Yes [6] [7]
Side effects Moderate to severe symptoms during the drip [2] Well tolerated in those trials [6] [7]
Cost $400 to $500 per drip at one clinic [5] Usually less per month than one drip

We found no study that compared a NAD+ drip with oral NMN directly, so the table compares the evidence for each route, not a head-to-head result. For more on oral precursors, see our NMN vs NAD+ comparison and our NMN dosage guide. For shots and injections, see our NAD+ injections guide.

The bottom line

A NAD+ drip puts NAD+ straight into the blood, but the evidence behind it is thin: small studies of blood levels and tolerability, no randomized trial in healthy adults, strong symptoms during the drip, and a high price per session. Oral precursors such as NMN have randomized trials that show higher blood NAD+ at a lower cost. Nadosei, for example, gives 500 mg NMN per serving, paired with research-validated companion compounds. If you still want a drip, ask about the pharmacy, the speed of the drip and the total cost, and talk to your own doctor first.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

What is NAD IV therapy good for?

Clinics offer NAD+ drips for energy, recovery and healthy aging. We found no randomized trial in healthy adults that tested these uses (PubMed search, October 2026). The human studies so far measured blood levels, tolerability and short-term safety markers.

What is the downside of NAD+ IV therapy?

In a 2026 study, people reported moderate to severe stomach and gut symptoms, a faster heart rate and chest pressure during NAD+ drips, and each 500 mg drip took about 97 minutes. The FDA has also warned about NAD+ products made from food-grade ingredients. A drip also costs several hundred dollars.

Are NAD IV drips worth it?

The evidence is thin: no randomized trial in healthy adults, strong symptoms during the drip and a high price. Oral NAD+ precursors such as NMN have randomized trials that show higher blood NAD+. Talk to your doctor about your own goals.

How long does a NAD+ IV drip take?

In a 2026 study, 500 mg NAD+ drips took 97 minutes on average, and drips of NR took 37 minutes. The NAD+ drips took longer because people had stronger symptoms during them.

Is NAD similar to Ozempic?

No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a prescription drug that acts on the GLP-1 receptor. NAD+ is a coenzyme that every cell uses for energy metabolism. They are different substances with different uses.

Can oral NMN replace NAD+ IV therapy?

They are different routes. In a 60-day randomized trial of healthy adults, oral NMN at 300 to 900 mg a day raised blood NAD+ and was well tolerated. We found no study that compared oral NMN with a NAD+ drip directly. Ask your doctor which route fits your goals.
